First-party pages averaged +2.3 positions. Generic pages averaged −10.3. That is a 12.6-position gap on the same domain, in the same vertical, over the same window.

A note on method. Pages were classified before ranking outcomes were pulled. The split was not retrofitted to the data. If a page had a proprietary element, it went in the first-party column regardless of where it ranked at the start of the year. Every movement in the table traces to a GSC export.

What counts as first-party vs generic

The word 'quality' does not help here. Both columns can be well-written, well-structured and technically sound. The difference is whether the page contains something only its publisher could produce.

First-party content has at least one of:

  • Original data: a survey, a measurement, an internal dataset, a usage study.
  • Dated first-hand testing: "we tested eight tools in March 2026 and here is what we found."
  • A working tool or template: a calculator, a classifier, a checklist that does real work.
  • Real client or project outcomes with enough detail to be verifiable and non-generic.
  • Primary-source reporting: an interview, a primary document, a case study with specifics.

Generic content has none of the above. It is a rewrite of the top-ranking pages. Possibly cleaner, possibly longer, but with no input that required the author to know something the reader couldn't find by reading the same sources.

Four-question classifier. Run it on any page:

  1. Does this page contain data, a measurement or a finding that we produced or collected ourselves?
  2. Does it document first-hand testing, with a named method and a date?
  3. Does it include a tool, template or resource that does work the reader can't do just by reading?
  4. Does it include a real outcome from a named or clearly-described client or project?

If the answer to all four is no, the page is generic. One yes is enough to move it into first-party territory, provided that element is substantive and not decorative.

Why first-party pages held

Two mechanisms, both operating at the same time.

Google's systems reward original information.

Google's helpful content guidance is explicit. It asks whether content provides "original information, reporting, research, or analysis." It asks whether content provides "substantial value when compared to other pages in search results." E-E-A-T, Google's framework for evaluating content quality, names experience as the first element: did the author actually do the thing they're writing about?

Generic rewrites fail those tests by definition. A page that synthesises what the top three results already say does not provide original information. It does not demonstrate experience. It adds nothing the reader couldn't get from the pages it was sourced from.

E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) is not a checklist you pass by adding an author bio. Google's guidance states that trust is the most critical element of the framework. First-party content earns trust through verifiable specifics. Generic content can gesture at authority but cannot produce the receipts. AI answers absorb generic content and remove the reason to click.

Why generic content slid

The failure mode is worth naming precisely, because it is not a vague quality problem.

Generic pages compete on being a slightly better rewrite. Cleaner structure. Better formatting. Faster load time. Those signals mattered when ranking was primarily a function of on-page signals and links. They matter less now.

Google's systems are now explicitly looking for original information and real experience. An AI system is now capable of satisfying the informational need the page was written to serve. When neither of those things works in your favour, the page's only remaining moat is inertia. Inertia runs out.

Zero-click search is the macro pressure. Generic content is the micro version of the same problem: when the content is commodity, the traffic it generates is as contestable as the content itself. Anyone can publish the same page. No one can defend it.

  • A comparison you ran yourself. Name the options, name the date, describe the method.
  • A template or calculator that does real work. Not a downloadable PDF with six tips. A tool the reader can apply immediately and get a result from.
  • One real client example with enough specifics to be non-generic. Not "a client in the construction sector saw results." Name the outcome, the context, the timeframe.

Before/after example. One of the generic pages in the comparison table was a "how to choose [category] software" guide. Standard criteria: ease of use, integrations, support, pricing. Well-written, 1,800 words, held position 12 for eighteen months. By mid-2026 it was at position 22.

The rewrite added one element: a documented evaluation of eight tools, run against five criteria the client's own customers had named in a post-purchase survey. Criteria from real buyers, not from what the software vendors list as features. The page now sits at position 9. Word count barely changed. The information gain did.

What to stop funding. Net-new generic explainers. If a page requires no original input to produce, it is competing on the weakest possible ground right now. That budget is better spent adding a proprietary element to an existing page than publishing another rewrite.
