[ Free tool ]Topical Authority Score

See your topical authority score, and what you’re missing.

You rank for a keyword. That doesn’t mean you own the topic. Enter a domain, a topic, and a market, and get a score out of 100 plus the subtopics you’re not covering.

Free. No signup. Built on Ahrefs data and live search results.

Your score, breakdown and gap list appear here. Nothing is stored.

This scores a domain against the whole topic, not a single keyword.
[ 02 ]What this means

Ranking for a keyword isn’t owning a topic.

Google doesn’t give the top spots to the site with one good page. It gives them to the source that covers the subject better than anyone else. Depth wins, not a single lucky ranking.

A topic is a cluster of questions, comparisons, and problems that all sit under one subject. Most topics break into 20 to 60 subtopics. You might rank well for three of them and have nothing on the other forty. That gap is why a competitor with weaker links still beats you across the board.

Your topical authority score shows where you sit against the full topic, and which subtopics are dragging your coverage down.

[ 03 ]What the score measures

Four things, each with a published weight.

The score isn’t a black box. It combines four things, each with a published weight so you can see how it’s built.

  • Coverage. How many of the topic’s subtopics your site has content for.
  • Rankings. Where you actually rank for those subtopics, not just whether a page exists.
  • Supporting pages. The depth behind your main page, the cluster that backs it up.
  • Domain strength. How much authority your domain brings to the topic.

You get a number out of 100 and a gap list: the subtopics you’re missing or ranking poorly for.

[ 04 ]What to do with your result

A low score is a content plan, not a verdict.

  • 80 and up. You own the topic. Protect it. Keep the cluster fresh and watch for new subtopics.
  • 50 to 79.You’re in the race. The gap list shows the handful of subtopics that would move you into the lead.
  • Under 50. You rank for pieces, not the subject. The missing subtopics are your build order.

Start at the top of the gap list. The subtopics with real search demand and no coverage are the fastest wins.

The tool uses the same topic-mapping method I run on client work. A free score gives you the number and the top gaps in under a minute. A full audit maps every subtopic, ranks the gaps by demand and difficulty, and hands you the build order.

[ 06 ]FAQs

Questions about the tool.

What is topical authority?

How completely your site covers a subject in the eyes of a search engine. A site with topical authority ranks across most of the questions and subtopics under a subject, not just one or two keywords.

Is the score accurate?

It's built from real data: subtopic coverage, live ranking positions, supporting pages, and domain strength, each with a set weight. It's a directional read you can act on today. For a complete picture, a full audit checks every subtopic by hand.

Where does the data come from?

Ahrefs for search demand and ranking data, plus live search results for the market you pick. The score reflects what's happening in the results right now, not a cached snapshot.

What's a topic map?

The list of every subtopic that sits under a subject: the questions, comparisons, and use cases people search for around the main subject. Most topics break into 20 to 60 subtopics. The tool maps these, then checks how many you cover.

Can I change the weights?

The free score uses a fixed set of weights so results stay comparable across sites. In a full audit we can weight the map to your goals, for example leaning harder on commercial subtopics if that's where the revenue sits.

What's the gap list for?

It shows the subtopics you're missing or ranking poorly for, sorted so the best opportunities sit at the top. Treat it as a content plan: build these, in this order, and your coverage climbs.

Do I need a full audit?

No. The score and gap list are enough to start. The audit is for when you want the complete map, every subtopic scored and prioritised, so nothing gets missed and you know exactly what to build first.

[ 07 ]Want the full topic map?

Find out how much of your topic you own.

The free score gives you the headline number and your biggest gaps. A full audit maps the entire topic, scores every subtopic, and prioritises what to build first by search demand and how hard each one is to win.
